Top Search Engine Ranking – Anatomy of a perfect incoming link

In the quest for a top search engine rank, you’ll surely be working on building as many links to your site or page as you can.  But not all links are created equal.  Something that’s apparently very simple in fact has many dimensions that determine how valuable a link will be for you.  Paying careful attention to all aspects of your incoming links will give you the most bang for your buck.

1)      Keyword text of links – the keywords used in the link itself is one of the most influential factors in how much it helps push you towards a top search engine ranking.  Prefer to use either your primary keyword or a closely related keyword in links coming into your page.

2)      Keyword in URL – having your keywords in the actual link or page name is important.  You probably have a mod that does this for you, but if you not you need to get one right away.

3)      Links from relevant sites – links from sites that are completely unrelated to your page will not help very much.  You should be seeking out links from sites that are as closely related to the topic of your page as possible.

4)      Link from relevant pages – closely related to the last point, you want your link to come from a page that is very closely related to your own page.  In fact, the position of the link on the page can be optimized by being in context on the page.  The short version is that the surrounding context of links, within a page, of the page as a whole, and the containing site itself all contribute to how much influence that link provides.

5)      Authority of linking site – links from large, authoritative sites count much more towards your pages ranking than those from small or insignificant sites.  Other pages or sites with top search engine ranking will help pull you up.  Sites with low rank will not pull you down, but they won’t do much to increase your ranking either.

You won’t be able to make every link to your site perfect.  You won’t have control over many of them, and that’s ok.  In fact, variety in your incoming links is another important aspect of an overall strategy for top search engine ranking.  But for those links where you do have control, optimize your links by following these principles.
